What is ‘woke’?

"Woke" began as a term that people used to refer to themselves or others who are aware and conscious of issues relating to social justice, stuff like systemic racism or LGBT rights. But over time, the people who self-described as being "woke" got increasingly silly and considered themselves woke for hyper-specific and relatively unimportant or even nonexistent things. So these days, it's mostly used in a sort of ironic way. Like it's a pejorative term used to refer to people who think they're really cutting edge and progressive and forward-thinking, but they actually aren't.

@LvChris Well see that's what happens with terms like this. They start out with a real meaning, then the people who ascribe to that meaning jump the shark and so everyone starts to look down on them. As a result, their word gets turned into an ironic pejorative. But then, that redefined word gets co-opted by everyone else and it turns into a meaningless nothing words. Look at terms like "boomer" or "cancel culture" or even the word "troll."

@LvChris I'm especially fond of people who think they're cool for using it but end up looking stupid lol

@BlueMetalChick
What about the conservative Trumpers calling people "woke SJW snowflakes?"

@Syntonic That's a good example of people latching onto a term that they just heard from it being popular and forgetting that it means something other than "person I dislike."
