What secret did your parents keep from you?

A secret which you only found out many years later?
When I applied for my Birth Certificate I found out that I had two brothers who died in childbirth in the late 50's
It was never mentioned at all.

When my Mother wanted to remarry we had this whole conversation about how much ‘easier it would be if us kids (2) were adopted by hubby #2 and changed our surname to the same as hubby #2’.

Wasn’t keen for a host of reasons but in discussion with my younger brother, late nights after we’d gone to bed, we decided it was ultimately about whatever made my Mother happy.

Which of course it wasn’t but that tells you something about how manipulative she was !

So off I go to Secondary school with this new name I disliked.
Spent six years at school and in every aspect of life from school through to medical stuff to working life using my adoptive name until one day I make the fateful decision to get married.

At which point we go to the Registrar to fill out our bans (you have to have an official form filled out with your full name; D.o.B etc. so it can be put on display for all to see in the Registry office the idea being that if anyone objects they can register their objection prior to the ‘main event’ and if found valid you can’t get married)

And when the Registrar went to check on the details she came back some time later and said there never was an adoption !

@Picklebobble2 Did your real Father have any say re the fact that you were to be adopted away from him?
Have you changed your name back to your real Fathers name?
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@Gusman No. He was pretty absent for much of the time after he left.
I suppose if she had wanted to follow through with adoption she would have needed his consent in some way (this was mid 70's. Law may be different today)

But yes i changed it back.
All i had to do was to 'be known' by my original name and gain some sort of recognition for it from official sources for a period of time.
