That's tough to find out.
My wife was a teenager when she found her parents had an older child who died just after childbirth.
But I can imagine that's a topic that's hard to discuss. My wife was youngest of three. She could have thought, "If Deborah lived you'd never have had me"
Daft but I can see why family stuff is not discussed at times.
I don't know of any secret kept from me.
My grandma was very strict about marriage, sex relations etc, very church orientated. When she died and I helped mum and my aunt find all the papers... Found she was born out of wedlock and their grandad hadn't really been their grandad at all.
