To make a long story short, life is complicated due to ego. The ego is the part of our brain that tells us what we want, what we like, what we hate, and ultimately what we are.
People could theoretically dwell peacefully in small communities, rely on subsistence farming and live in relative simplicity, but we have egos. People wanted to have more, people developed particular tastes, people formed strong opinions, and people classified themselves into tribes.
The thing about egos is that they are inherently selfish, which is often a counterproductive trait for a social species. This is why it seems like people are fighting two battles at once, one is a battle to preserve a society and the other is a battle to satisfy ourselves. Life is simply the balancing act between these two ends

@WhatLifeIsFor: It's impossible to get rid of it. Most people don't even know they have it. It's more of a matter of acceptance. Accept that you have an ego, but do not let it consume you. This is a feat far easier said than done.
