85%+ of the people who die of COVID, are past their 60th birthday. As of 24 March 2021, only about 22900 Americans under age 50 have died of COVID.
Every year, tens of thousands of elderly Americans die of pulmonary flu that morphs into pneumonia. This is a situation that all Americans accept in silence.
Nursing homes and the like need to adopt very strict hygiene protocols so as to reduce the likelihood of contracting COVID and seasonal flu. Events that draw large crowds, such as rallies, spring break, rock concerts and sport matches, may have to be regulated. But we should seriously entertain the possibility that lockdowns that prevent people from working are a treatment that is worse than the disease they purport to cure.
All first world countries are on the hook for shelling out tax dollars for old age pensions. Every elderly person who dies of COVID is one less person who is owed an old age pension financed by taxpayers. 1.37M residents of first world nations have died of COVID. Assume that 80% of these dead were retirees, enjoying an average pension of US$25K/year. 50% of these dead were in nursing homes costing US$35K/year and paid by the public purse. Assume that the remaining life expectancy of nursing home residents in first world countries, is 3 years. Assume that life expectancy, averaged over the first world countries and conditional on reaching the 65th birthday, is 16 years. Hence (30% of 1.37M) x (81-65) years x US$25K/year + (50% of 1.37M) x 3 years x US$35K/year = About US$250B the public purse does not have to spend, thanks to COVID.
