Is it their right to denigrate people?

People in the public eye, as in Rugby Players who represent the country, seem it is okay to use their religious views to castigate non believers.
Australia's Israel Folau lost his position in the Australian side for saying the LGBTIQ community members will go to hell for disobeying "God's" Orders.
He continues today by saying that the fires devastating Australia, claiming 6 lives and destroying over 500 homes is "God's" punishment for supporting the LGBTIQ community.
The Australian Christian lobby fully supports his views.
Surely if one does not have anything supportive to say then they should keep their divisive views to themselves?

I wonder why he spoke up like that...what caused the resulting condemnation.

@Pfuzylogic My take on this is he has gained a misplaced sense of importance.
I think he is setting his life goals to be a major influencer.
Maybe he has visions of having his own congregation, the likes of Billy Graham?

So you are sharing that there was no cause for the statement..., he just decided to share a deeply held belief.
