Who is more cruel, Humans or nature ?

Here are 2 true scenarios to consider. I encountered this on Wikipedia while reading about a rain spider living in my house.

A: An experiment was done in 1959 where a Palystes superciliosus (Rain/Huntsman spider) was allowed to bite an adult guinea pig on the nose. The guinea pig died within 7 minutes, leading to a belief that the spider's venom was dangerous. However, further research on anaesthetized guinea pigs showed that the original guinea pig had actually died of shock, rather than as a result of the spider's venom. In humans the bite is no more dangerous than a bee sting.

B: P. superciliosus (and other Palystes spiders) are also commonly seen paralysed, being dragged by a large wasp called a Pompilid wasp. Sometimes the wasp will not be present. Pompilid wasps only hunt spiders, which they paralyse by stinging them. They then drag the spider back to their nest where they lay an egg on the spider, then seal the spider and the egg in. When the egg hatches, the larva eats the paralysed spider, keeping the spider alive as long as possible by eating peripheral flesh first, and saving the vital organs till last. By doing this, the spider stays fresh long enough for the wasp larva to mature and pupate.

Humans are a part of nature.

Cruel is a human adjective and it kind of implies awareness. Nature isn't self aware. Nature is just nature.

Cool spider.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Miram Yes I suppose. Nature just is what it is.
Maybe I should have asked, which scenario makes you cringe more ?
Miram · 31-35, F
@Wraithorn nothing wrong with your question. Notice i said"cool spider", that's just how we naturally come to think of things ^^

I have seen a lot of bad things done by humans. The rest of animals are more kind.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Miram Yeah, I suppose our knowledge of good and bad actually means that we're the bad guys.

I can't help thinking though about my love and adoration for cats even though they can and sometimes do toreture and play with their prey for hours. They're such cute little schmucks but they can be nasty. 😸

I have heard of this behavior in wasps before. A friend of mind has a friend with tomato plants, and a large green tomato worm was eating his plants...but later he found the worm covered with white eggs. Same thing. It does seem very cruel, to be eaten from the inside while unable to move.
4meAndyou · F
@Wraithorn Hey, maybe we should tell President Trump to have his researchers look into that... he has ordered research into non-addictive pain relievers.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@4meAndyou Okay, good idea. We can start by throwing him into a tank full of spiders and wasps.
We'll collect the resultant data for the good of humanity. 🙂
4meAndyou · F
@Wraithorn 😂 Well, if we are correct, he will be the pioneer who discovered non-addictive pain reliever! Yay!!

We judge nature and call it cruel, or beautiful, or many adjectives, but nature is not really any of them.
novembermoon · 51-55
Interesting post. I did not know the wasp is capable of that. Thanks for sharing!
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@novembermoon Sounds horrific doesn't it ? If you look at one of my previous questions you will see a photo of the spiders that the wasp preys on.

Sometimes some human and sometimes somewhere nature, no generalization
ThePerfectUsername · 70-79, M
Nature isn't cruel, it just "is".
I takes a sentient being to be deliberately cruel.
bowman81 · M
Cruel is a human construct. I remember reading about the eyes of a shark....no emotion, no mercy, no caring. The shark eats...and procreates and is a shark....it isn't good nor bad, it just is. As a human that can be a terrifying thing.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@bowman81 Indeed. Reasoning with a shark is pretty much not effective.
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
I think humans. We have forethought and insight, we're supposed to know better when we do violent things. Wasps just do what they do, for survival.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@rottenrobi Yeah, that's it I think.
Thank goodness wasps are not bigger or we'd have a problem with their babies eating us. 🙂
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
@Wraithorn Dont even get me started on wasps. I'm not certain of their purpose here on the planet, except to torment humans. Someone once told me their place in nature's order, but I quickly forgot what it was because I loathe them so much. Lol.
Miram · 31-35, F
If I say, I like being in nature, it doesn't mean I am saying I am unnatural. We tend to call all else nature as opposed to human civilization.

I think the same applies to the question.
SW-User
I don’t know but I’ll say humans. There would be nothing left of the human race if some people had the power to destroy according to the hate in their hearts.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
Hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis are part of nature, so you decide.
cycleman · 61-69, M
what other creature is destroying the world? just humans.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
we are nature
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Ryannnnnn I know...we are becoming more and more removed from it though.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@Wraithorn I'm not sure if that's possible by definition but I get what you're saying. I suppose the fact that we can decide to do something cruel knowing it is cruel makes it cruel, whilst nature maybe doesn't discriminate.

But then again there are other animals that can be very cruel eg. chimps torturing animals, killer whales beating seals to death for fun.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Ryannnnnn I suppose the bottom line is, life on Earth can be harsh. 🙂

What do you think humans are a part of
Peppa · 31-35, F
Always humans
SW-User
Humans literally separate children from other humans and sell them to be raped daily by other humans.

Some punk wasp ain't got nothing on that
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Damn ! Yes in terms of such things us Humans are the worst.
I think the awareness and design of doing harm for entertainment, not survival, is what makes an action cruel.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard That sounds quite true.
