I wish we had a kinder more accepting culture, in the USA, for transgendered. I don't think feel like "how would society benefit" is the way I look at it. Nothing against your question but the idea of "we accept them if they benefit society" is such a selfish way to look at a fellow human being.
I have trans friends in real life and can tell you they are the same as any other friend you may have. They have jobs, hobbies, passions, and are a part of all of our communities.
I find the othering of them deeply troubling and sad.
