Is being trans a mental illness?

Is being a transsexual and or transgender a mental illness? Discuss.

(Disclosure): I mean mental illness in the same sense as any mental illness such as ADD, ADHD, OCD, all the way to schizophrenia. I’m not using the term mental illness as in a brainless nut job.

Personally i dont think i can talk on this matter, because i am not trans, nor do i know anyone that is trans. The only thing i can say is there are many people finding confidence to be themselves and where in the past they may have had menral health issues like anxiety and depression those are becoming less because they are more accepted. So with that knowledge I'd say its similar to being straight or gay. You're unfortunately just born in the wrong body, and unlike just dating your sexual preference you have to live with body parts that are not "right". (my understanding is many don't go the full surgery route)
