Is being trans a mental illness?

Is being a transsexual and or transgender a mental illness? Discuss.

(Disclosure): I mean mental illness in the same sense as any mental illness such as ADD, ADHD, OCD, all the way to schizophrenia. I’m not using the term mental illness as in a brainless nut job.

The high rate of suicide within that demographic is one of several indicators. Plus at its core, it's a matter of "I imagine myself to be something other than what I am." For everyone else to pretend they are okay and to go along with their ill imaginings are not helping them.
