Is being trans a mental illness?

Is being a transsexual and or transgender a mental illness? Discuss.

(Disclosure): I mean mental illness in the same sense as any mental illness such as ADD, ADHD, OCD, all the way to schizophrenia. I’m not using the term mental illness as in a brainless nut job.

@MarmeeMarch Indeed! A very wise man I know...believes there is no mental illness. He attributes many behaviors to other things. I've never read that but I shall.

@Magenta There are about 5 real illnesses - I dont want to say that there are none - personally I have never read the book but I do believe this ADHD and the others is just BS and attention seeking devices.
