I’ve just been stiffed £250ish on school uniforms ready for September…

Maybe I’ll go on a diet. I’m not fat, I just can’t afford to eat for a few weeks…

It's about time schools in the UK stopped requiring uniforms.

@ninalanyon I have no problem with them wearing uniforms at school - there are some benefits - I just think the school should cover some or all of the cost.

@WintaTheAngle I wore uniform throughout my school career. The only benefit I could see is that while in uniform one represented the school and the school both expected good behaviour and accepted responsibility to wider society when the pupils fell short of that standard. From what I hear from relatives in the UK these standards are no longer maintained so what's the point?

My three children went to schools without uniform (in Norway) and never felt the lack.

@ninalanyon Rich and poor kids look and dress alike so there’s no stigma, they can be identified by members of the public if they ever get separated from the group on school trips, they are taught how to take pride in their appearance, they look good in the school photos we keep just as our parents did, and one of my daughters says the blazer pockets are great for filling with sweets…😂

@WintaTheAngle That was the main purpose of our school uniform. We even had to wear them when we went into town on Saturday to stop us from getting into trouble 🙂

@WintaTheAngle When I was at school in the 60s and early 70s we had no trouble identifying the pupils whose parents were poor or uncaring. Hand me downs, frayed cuffs, shirts not washed as often as they should have been, etc. And as for being identified by members of the public if they become separated from the group, well children should be taught from a very early age to identify themselves. My children's school photos look fine to me, all clean, self confident, and neatly dressed.
