Prankster gives thanks to NRA leader for all his "thoughts and prayers" after one mass shooting after another.

"You keep hearing that Wayne LaPierre isn't doing enough and frankly that's not true. The NRA, under Wayne LaPierre's leadership, has provided thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families. And maybe these mass shootings would stop happening if we all thought a little bit more, and we prayed a little bit more, so I'm asking everyone in this room to think, to pray. Give your thoughts and your prayers, and your thoughts and your prayers, and your prayers and your thoughts, and if we give enough of these thoughts and these prayers, these mass shootings will stop," he said. "So I want to thank you, Wayne LaPierre, for all your thoughts and all your prayers. Thank you."

In the video, even the NRA leader seems surprised his leadership is being (fake) applauded.

@MarkPaul What would you do to stop mass shootings?
justanothername · 51-55, M
@SW-User You can’t walk into a crowded classroom and shoot everyone in it if you don’t have a gun.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@SW-User More than "thoughts and prayers."

1. Apply the same rigor that it takes to earn the privilege to drive a car to using a gun.
2. Certify at least annually police officers have a shoot-to-kill capability for any mass shooter regardless of the circumstances. Those that don't certify can't be on their local police force.
3. Educate the population with historical knowledge on what the 2nd Amendment says and what it was intended for instead of relying on propaganda from a trade association tasked with selling more guns (NRA).
4. Regulate weapons intended for mass shootings (AR15, etc.) differently and more stringently from hunting and self-defense armaments.
5. Learn from countries that have successfully reduced mass shootings.
6. Ignore those who claim because the problem can't be 100% solved, no solution (other than thoughts and prayers) should ever be enacted.
7. Challenge the fear that any action to contain mass shootings = a plan to eliminate all guns.
SW-User
@justanothername So what are you suggesting? If you're suggesting stopping the sale and confiscation of all firearms in Texas that's just not going to happen
SW-User
@SW-User so describe to me your suggested policy proposal and we can have a discussion on it. for me it is a concern that the government will gradually erode away at the second amendment until it means basically nothing. Historically gun rights have only gone away, its very rare that any gun rights are given back to the people
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@SW-User See my point #7. It's an unfounded fear. Why don't you have that same fear that your car will be confiscated and never given back because to get a license you have to go through certification training, you have to get a license through the state, you are required to have auto insurance, etc. And, even with all that, there are still unsafe drivers on the road causing unsafe conditions. Since it doesn't 100% solve the problem, do you want to abandon all car safety regulations and licensing requirements?

Describe your unbased fear honestly and without propaganda points and we can have a discussion on it.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@SW-User why not.
If you don’t have a license you can’t legally be in charge of a motor vehicle. It’s a process in life that we all go through at a certain age.
SW-User
@justanothername For the record, I'm against requiring drivers licenses, but that's not really the point. Driving a car isn't an explicitly stated constitutional right, and the right of you to drive your car is in no way as important as the right to self defense. My concern is that history has shown whenever an evil government comes to power the first thing they do is confiscate weapons and force their citizens defenseless
@SW-User Ban AR15 weapons, limit magazines to 5 rounds, crack down on sale and transfers of guns.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@SW-User It may not be a constitutional right but it is definitely a rite of passage for any teen wanting independence from their parents and effectively freedom to drive where every they want with their friends.

I’m not against requiring drivers to pass a driver license test and to go through drivers education. It’s the best way there is of maintaining driving standards and stopping unnecessary deaths on the road.
SW-User
@independentone well first off, all of those suggestions sound like serious infringements on the right to bare arms. But what do you consider and AR-15? And why that style of gun? What do you mean by "crack down"
SW-User
@independentone welcome to Canada! It doesn't work! Criminals don't give a flying fuck what mags are limited to, or any other law!
@SW-User So apparently, you think if criminals can ignore laws, you can too. Why have any laws at all then?
@SW-User Do you really need a weapon capable of firing 50 rounds in a few seconds? If you can't hit what you're aiming at in 1 or 2 shots, you shouldn't have a gun to begin with.
By cracking down on existing laws, how about actual background checks to start with?
SW-User
@independentone I challenge you to find me any weapon available to us citizens without a class 3 firearms license that can fire 50 rounds in a few seconds. It doesn't exist.

"If you can't hit what you're aiming for in 1 or 2 shots you shouldn't have a gun to begin with" why on earth not? What if someone is attacking you and you're nevous? What if more that 2 people are attacking you? The right to self defense is absolutely, it's not up to you or the government what type of weapon I'm allowed to have to defend myself. And it's not up to me to defend the type of weapon I might need
SW-User
As far as background checks go, background checks are already required in all 50 states when you're but from an FFL and there's really not any evidence that's had any impact on crime
pdockal · 56-60, M
@SW-User train and arm more citizens and get better mental health care
If mentally challenged person is identified at a young age then they can be helped
And if somewhere is a group of victims somebody was trained to defend themselves there would be less fatalities
@SW-User Then why is it illegal for me to have chemical weapons or nuclear weapons? According to your reasoning, the government shouldn't be allowed to dictate what weapons I choose to defend myself with.
SW-User
@pdockal that's an excellent point! As unfortunate as it is, there are bad actors out there and it's important to know how to defend yourself or others
SW-User
@independentone yeah, shouldn't be any of the governments business. Kind of a dangerous thing to do because it sets the precedent that the government has the right to disarm you, hence the conversation we're having right now
SW-User
@SW-User this is happening right now in Canada! You are chatting with a felon! Lol
