That is terrible, but with modern equipment it ought be easier to spot what's happening where even in the vast forests of the North American continent, and go in to destroy the thieves' vehicles and equipment where they stand, and arrest the thieves themselves.
Or perhaps keep watch and ambush them when they emerge onto the roads - which would save having to recover the wreckage from deep within forests.
It also needs the support of arresting the thieves' first-line customers on the charge of handling stolen goods (or whatever would be the equivalent), and closing their businesses.

Yes I have. Two people were jailed for ten years for cutting down our beloved Sycamore Gap tree.

It's a problem in Washington State. Unfortunately it seems to be something we can do little about.
