@carpediem It's completely disgusting. I hope and pray that someday, ALL of the citizens of Chicago will read Vince Everett Ellison's book, The Iron Triangle, and wake up to the way they are being used and abused.
@Roadsterrider Despite the corruption, the city has been a culture center forever. I don't know if you've ever been or just parroting the ill will of the day. It is (was) a great town with great people. Fantastic leisure opportunities, restaurants, nightlife, culture, etc. But clearly it's in decline. And this fool mayor has hit the accelerator.
@carpediem I spent 5 years in Chicago while based at NAS Glenview. Five years there and 4 years 364 days were spent trying to figure out a way to get transferred away from Chicago. There were some great bars and clubs at the time, a favorite downtown was The Checkerboard Lounge, there was a place off of 63rd I think called Bib's Malibu Lounge and another I think was called Hillside Lounge close by. It was too crowded, too expensive and too much crime. I got lost and drove through Cabrini Green it is the only place I have had to drive through an active gun fight with civilians doing the shooting.
@Roadsterrider The Blues scene is ugly as much as entertaining. But it’s part of the once great culture that was Chicago.
Cabrini has been torn down for a long time. As kids we’d go to Mothers on Division. You better have your bearings on the way out or you’d wind up smack dab in Cabrini Green.
@carpediem I love blues music, as a white guy, I never had any problems on the south side. I had a couple friends I would go make the rounds of the blues clubs. The only problem was as the only white guy there and with short hair, everyone assumed I was a cop till I started drinking. I remember Mothers, Doc Weeds and Lime Rickeys. I was never a dancer, so they didn't appeal to me as much as the blues clubs.
@Roadsterrider I did the rounds on all the Blues clubs. You mentioned Checkerboard so I assumed you enjoyed blues. I actually recall Maxwell Street back in the day where guys would be literally be jamming on the corner.
@carpediem Mrs. Budwick and I would haunt the south side blues clubs before we got married. We had a great time. Also loved the Blues Fest. All in mid to late 90's
@Budwick It was always cold in early June every damned Blues Fest. But they were fun. I enjoyed south loop because I kept my boat at Burnham. It was so easy to get in and out at some decent restaurants. The north side was getting too crazy. All that's changed now of course. I avoid the place like the plague.
@carpediem Can you imagine how wonderful places like Chicago-as well as California and New York-could become again with they were run the right way?Not that it will ever happen.
@carpediem Besides that, they also know enough to control the court system. If some once-in-a-lifetime fluke occurs and the wrong person does get elected(e.g Trump),they'll just run to the courts who they know will give them whatever they want.Sad,really.
