The Netherlands has such a low crime rate..

That they are facing prison closures all over the country. By focusing on rehabilitation, innovative corrections methods and lowering sentencing, the Netherlands has achieved a goal that most countries envy. They now have the ability to pour resources into organized crime, drug syndicates, and cyber crimes focusing less on minor offenses.

Hmmmmm
Reduced sentences ?????
How does that help ?????
@pdockal By focusing on rehabilitation/correction, reducing sentences helps inmates integrate back into society. The longer a prisoner is incarcerated, the longer they’re out of work, away from family, and unable to progress professionally or socially.

@Notmesam

Sounds like they aren't punished for their crimes and more criminals are walking around ... that doesn't sound good to me
@pdockal Prison should be for correction/rehabilitation, not just punishment. What’s the point of having prisons if we’re not attempting to correct the behavior?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Notmesam

So punishment doesn't correct the behavior ? ?

The punishment should fit the crime
Recidivism should be punished harsher

Some people are just wicked/ evil abs can't be fixed
@pdockal If punishment alone corrected behavior, the USA would be crime free. Punishment or even the threat of punishment doesn’t work, never has. Don’t you want to see criminals leave prison as productive members of society?

@Notmesam

I want prison to punish not just incarserate
I don't want them getting law degrees that i pay for
I don't want them getting elective surgeries which i pay for & my medical coveted won't cover for me
I want old fashioned chain gangs for violent offenses
I don't want weight rooms
I don't want them getting paid
I don't want them having TV
i don't want then having cell phones, booze, cigarettes
Etc
Etc
Etc

Education needs to start before they commit the crime because some aspects of society feel they are entitled to things they didn't earn
If you eliminate they mentality & teach working for what your have then come will go down

@pdockal The Netherlands has a homicide rate ten times lower than the USA, which has a more punitive regime. That measure alone suggests that punishment is relatively ineffective in preventing violent crime.
@pdockal So we’ve seen what works, and what doesn’t work. But you want people to be punished no matter what the outcome?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl

It's about the size of Maryland
It would take 270 Netherlands to fill USA
so of course we have exponentially more crime

@Notmesam

See above
Yes people should be punished for their crimes
Most civilized people world agree
@pdockal doesn’t matter how big or small place is what works works. You can look at the same data here in the US. The correctional facilities that focus on rehabilitation do better than the ones that don’t. Makes sense doesn’t it? If an inmate has a way to make a living once he’s released, he’s less likely commit crime. It’s a no-brainer. It’s also what’s better for America, I would rather see people come out of corrections, ready to contribute to society, rather than going back in cause we’re just focused on punishment. America 1st! It shouldn’t be about your feelings.

@Notmesam

Directly from Google AI : Rehabilitation programs do not work the same for every population.
@pdockal AI? Lol. Go ahead and give me the source of that information. Tell AI to source that information for you send me the link.

@Notmesam

@ this point you'll say the opposite of anything i say unless it agrees with you

Your not worth my time
This isn't worth my time
here’s a quick article for you: read it yourself. Don’t let AI do the thinking for you.

@pdockal i’m glad to have you prove me wrong. Just give me the source of the data. AI isn’t necessarily reliable unless you check sources.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Notmesam

No you're not
All you keep saying is it works for them it'll definately work here
You say letting criminals get lighter sentences is the answer which is not
Yes giving lighter sentences will keep prisons empty
Just like putting them in military service
@pdockal putting them in military service works as well I think. I have a couple of friends that opted for military service when confronted with the option to going to prison. For for them, I think that was the better option.

I’m saying that for prisoners in general, when you give them an option for opportunity after prison. They are less likely to come back to prison. And it’s been proven over and over again, here in the US and abroad. Now are there gonna be people that commit crime no matter what? Of course, but for the majority of sane people in prison access to opportunity works.

Just like access to opportunity works in any setting. Give people access to education, jobs, safety, and they will, in general do better in life.
