How do you pronounce "Gel", "Gist" and "G"?
There is no rule that an acronym should be pronounced the way first letter of the words in the phrase are.
It should not be any more point of debate when the creator himself tells, it is pronounced with soft g not hard.

Wilhite receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Webby Awards and used his platform to make his declaration. “It's pronounced JIF, not GIF.” Just like the peanut butter. “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Wilhite told The New York Times.26 Feb 2020
