Why do people in the USA pronounce 'soldering' as 'saudering'?

I couldn't work it out for a while but then after watching a bunch of electronics assembly videos from the US for phone/pc repair and model railway DCC I worked it out.

The 'l' is *not* silent in the words 'solder' and 'soldering'. 8-)

It's to balance the unasked for "i" that Brits pronounce when naming the metal. "Don't solder aluminum". (vs aluminium).
