It's simply old slang word for "man", along with "chap" and "fellow" (oft. pron. "fella"" though these latter two have a slightly posher associations.
Equivalent I suppose to the American slang, "guy", which has sadly drifted over the seas and become used for males and females of any age. I refuse to obey.
As for talking "so funny", who invented the language, eh...? :-)
