English question

Which is better:

A. He got killed in the accident.
B. He was killed in the accident.

English is not my first language and any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Just to add a 3rd: "He died in the accident"

"He was killed in the accident" is the better choice.
Camelia · F
He was killed in the accident.

Tense is important.

English has few tenses, only three actually. So to make up the lack of tense, some may choose words differently.

With that in mind, with some, the word "got" implies something in the past, yet recent past. While "was" is a definite long term past tense.

This is not a recognized use. So some do not even know they are doing it.

Others often call it childish because they refuse to recognize such a thing as a short term past tense.

Other languages at times have as many as nine different tenses. The Czech language is one of them.

Unless the accident is a specific event you have referred to then ‘He was killed in an accident’ might be better.

A child might more commonly say the A sentence
An adult or more adept speaker would say B. As other people have mentioned, A is using very rudimentary, basic language where B is more refined, formal.
deadgerbil · 22-25
A is more informal, B is more formal

Essentially both are correct so the distinctions between the two do not really matter
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
B. A is technically correct, but somewhat informal.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
He was shaken up on the play
Nevertooold · 56-60, M
he was killed
