Actually I'm not sure if French was not in the running for it. The use of English as its language base, but ignoring all etymology, was simply by the largest number by nationality of the colonialists.
The young USA might have been metric too, but for accidents of history! Despite being unable to respect the ISO SI units' French names.
What's noticeable, is that not content with inventing technical terms for their own inventions America will sometimes adopt foreign but English-language country inventions, then change the terminology. Is that to suggest US origins?
