Can the same language mean different things in different cultures?

Is it difficult for someone English to be friends with an American? Can there be misunderstandings due to words having very different meanings on each side of the pond? It seems like it is relatively easy to insult an American with absolutely no intent whatsoever? Anyone experienced this? What did you do to remedy the situation?

Less chance now than ever. The Brits watch a lot of American TV and we watch more British TV. Movies too..there’s significant exhange.

Unlike Latin’s evolution

@Human1000 What British shows have you watched? What were your favourites? I'm really interested.
Human1000 · 51-55, M
@Lauren19 let’s see, The Young Ones, Monty Python, The Office, Faulty Towers, Peaky Blinders, Luther, Bodyguard, Upstairs Downstairs, Fleabag, Line of Duty, Extras, Abfab

@Lauren19 Other mysteries, too. Some of these are old for sure.

Oh, Sherlock.

@Human1000 Some good ones there. Also some horribly dated ones!
Human1000 · 51-55, M
@Lauren19 I know, lol, I think many other people watch a lot more than me, too, on Netflix.

@Human1000 I know I'm late to the party but I just watched Breaking Bad.
Human1000 · 51-55, M
@Lauren19 I loved Breaking Bad. What did you think? Well since you watched all of it that’s a clue…

Have you tried “The Wire?” or “Ray Donovan?”

For Peaky Blinders I had to watch with subtitles.
Lauren19 · 26-30, F
@Human1000 I thought it was excellent, but could have been done in four series' with some tweaking. Series 5 seemed a bit decadent? But I really enjoyed it.
I haven't tried those shows, no. And I haven't seen any Peaky Blinders either.

@Lauren19 American shows tend to go on too long. You guys know when to end them, and your actors can do amazing American accents (Irish actors can, too).

You should try Succession.

Oh, would you mind taking Harry back?
Lauren19 · 26-30, F
@Human1000 Haha, most of us don't give a shit about the ridiculous circus that is the Royal family.

@Human1000 Lolz. Most UK TV and movie characters are based in London so posh English and cockney (working class east London) are the only ones you get familiar with. We have loads of accents though.
Human1000 · 51-55, M
@Burnley123 What is Johnny Rotten’s accent?

I’ve watched a couple of YouTube videos about different British accents - had no idea there were so many.
