Are you currently trying to learn another language?

I've always been envious of people who can speak more than one language. The languages I most want to learn are Japanese and Portuguese (Brazilian). My boyfriend speaks fluent Brazilian Portuguese, and I love hearing him speaking it with his family. I've picked up some phrases from him, but would like to learn it in a formal context. Japanese is just a language I've always been interested in and am planning on taking courses in it this fall.

If you are learning one, are you using an app like Duolingo (curious if those are actually helpful)?

Duolingo is a good start if you're needing to pick up words as a complete novice.

Raiding your boyfriends music collection is another good one, too. You're looking for music recommendations. Create a playlist on YouTube with these songs - and add to it when you eventually start to get recommendations that you like the sound of... listen to this every day.

Find natives who already speak the language.

Duolingo is fun, but it it’s really just an introduction. If you really want to speak a second language, you need to be taking immersed in it or at least regular classes where you’re speaking and writing and learning your verb conjugations. Duolingo isn’t teaching you how to conjugate your verbs so how are you going to carry on a proper conversation without knowing how to do that?

I wish they had it on Duolingo!

@SwampFlower That's fascinating. I love the idea of keeping an endangered language alive.

@HiFiRaver I think you'd love it. I've read poems of Catullus but really haven't dove into Tacitus. But i know Virgil and Ovid were the biggest ancient rome writers

@Jokekilla My school offers a class on the Aeneid, so I may take that one if I can. 🤔

For now, my favorite Catullus verses:

Vōs, quod mīlia multa bāsiōrum
lēgistis male mē marem putātis?
Pēdīcābō ego vōs et irrumābō.

🤭
