Did you know...

.. that French is indeed a romance language. There are five Romance languages. You might be able to guess what a few of the other ones are , definitely not German LOL, but you probably wouldn't be surprised to know that italian, Spanish and Portuguese are three more. However, the last one might not make sense. That is, until you understand why they're called romance languages. The romance they're referring to is not the type that has anything to do with love or passion. Romance has to do with Romans because the five Romance languages are based on Latin, and the fifth one is Romanian. 🤔

Nice little history there. Thank you.

@LadyGrace it's my pleasure. It's something I just learned about maybe last year . I thought it was interesting and wanted to post it on Reddit but wasn't able to because it wasn't a link or some kind of stupid subreddit rule or whatever. I thought it was interesting when I heard somebody mentioned something about one of the romance languages like there's an official list of them so I looked it up and there was. But all it said really was that there are five Romance languages , listed them and said they're based on latin. I actually deduced the whole Roman romance thing and the INTP in me made me post it as if it's written in stone and it might not be. but it probably is. LOL🤫🤫🤫

Makes sense. The Romans were a large empire. Stands to reason some of their Language would have melded into other dialects...

@Thevy29 but where did the Romans go? They didn't all turn to Italians did they? Maybe they turned swiss, and that's why Switzerland is neutral and, why they guard the Vatican because they also turned Roman Catholic and I think the Catholic priests are the only ones that still speak Latin Maybe

..idk
German is mild compared to Scandinavian though.

@NativePortlander1970 actually, yes I did know but it's not as well known by the masses. There are some Middle Eastern languages that are well known but still neither of them nor the Scandinavians nor the Welsh LOL ever started a World War.
