@XenonRush all of it. The languages are very similar. Like north vs south states.

I studied German in high school and college because the options were Spanish, French and German.
How I wish I had chosen Spanish!
As a result I can speak a little German (but to whom?) and I can figure out a little Dutch when I read it.
Of course I live in an area saturated with Spanish speakers, although most also kindly speak English and will help my dumb self.

I took French but dropped it. I don't remember half of what I learned but I've always liked French. I took Spanish in college but dropped it for sign language because it was easier.

I can speak a bit of German. Chronic illness interrupted my studies though and I just never picked it back up. One of the many things I've been meaning to do. :)
I'm learning other languages...
@XenonRush Ever spent your life wanting to go "home", but not really knowing where "home" is - only that you don't belong where you are???
Well, that's how I felt for most of my life... until I started to read Dutch - even though I didn't understand the language, it calmed me and I could breathe for the first time.
Since I've been learning Dutch, I've generally felt calmer in myself and the same frustration and sense of "not belonging" hasn't returned.

That is really cool, actually! How fluent are you in Dutch right now?

@XenonRush I'm at the point where I can translate some short written messages by myself and songs are gradually revealing themselves to me as I learn more words.
However... I'm not yet confident with my spoken Dutch. I need to relax more and stop rushing my speech because I am nervous.

I tried learning American English once, but found the spelling too difficult.

I could converse "As Gaeilge" but I'm definitely not fluent and understand more than I have the confidence to speak..
Though my kids believe I'm better than I think as I'm well able to string sentences together
