Who here can speak a language, other than English?

Where did you learn Irish?

@XenonRush I'm Irish, I learned in school from the age of 4, then when I was older I went to the Gaeltacht for 3 weeks during the summer, we exclusively spoke Irish during this time, I went there 3 summers in a row

The Gaeltach is on the west coast of Ireland! I know this because I like geography! 😀

@SW-User how long do you think it would take you to become fluent if you fully immersed yourself in it?

@XenonRush but no and yes, I went to Gaeltacht in Ballingeary, West Cork, very far down
A Gaeltacht isn't an area, it's an Irish speaking area, of which there are many in Ireland but usually found, in more rural areas, so Donegal, Cork, Kerry, Galway etc

@XenonRush it's not surprising, nits not taught to us in a way that's easily learned like other languages are, they mess up in primary school and spend 8 years teaching basic words and grammar and the kids aren't getting the best grasp of the language


Things are improving but yeah.. It's pretty much a dying language

That is sad, I have heard recordings of it and it sounds quite beautiful! Do you think someday, it will be a dead language, like Latin?@SW-User

@XenonRush not really as there's a culture here of trying to keep it alive, for the moment anyway, when I say moment I mean for the foreseeable future.
