I took German in college recently so I'm familiar with it and when I did some dutch on Duolingo, the amount of similarities had me surprised

The Germanic people that became settled in central and northern Europe. And invaded it all too. Swiss, and Dutch will be similar too.

England was settled rather heavily by the Vikings, who came from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. That is why English people are called Anglo Saxons. Saxony, or Sachsen is, in modern times, the 16th largest German state, but in ancient times, there was significant crossover and bleed between the various Northern countries of Europe...including language.
