Will I need to know french to get by in Montreal for a week?

You will find that a Quebec accent is quite different from the Parisian one we learn in French classes.

My experience in Montreal is that people like hotel clerks and restaurant servers wait for you to speak first, and then respond in whichever language you used.

Some people you meet might not know English or refuse to speak English. But that latter reaction is based on resentment toward the rest of Canada. So, maybe you should try Arabic first! Then they might be happy to respond when you switch to English! 😄

Last time I was in Montreal, most everyone I encountered spoke English. Less so in Quebec City.

i think you will be fine. The restaurants in Old Quebec are used to the tourists. MOntreal is not an issue at all. Let me know if you want a few ideas where to eat. I go to Quebec City 3-4 times a year

You can get by in English but you won’t be treated well. Québécois want everybody in Canada to speak French but refuse to use English.
