I wanted to make a joke about bat mitzvahs then realised I know fuckall about Bar & Bat Mitzvahs and therefore it'd be an absolutely crap joke.

So I decided to educate myself and got a bit distracted by the pictures on wikipedia of this device some of the adults are wearing(their dads?) on their foreheads.

What is it and its function in the ceremony?

Interesting. I have no idea but I'm curious too.

they are called tefillin, the little box contains a sacred scroll and the leather straps hold it in place with specific ties and knots.

These are “tefillin”. They contain biblical verses and are used in prayer by Orthodox Jews. I have an old set that used to belong to my great grandfather.

@Harmonium1923 @samueltyler2 thank you so much
It's nice to see people educating themselves about things like this and not saying negative stuff.
always thought a bar mitzvah was when a boy became old enough to drink in a bar to get away from a girl who had a bat mitzvah and is now bat shit crazy
