Came across an article in the paper yesterday with the honourable lady's obituary.
Wow !
The older i get the more it mystifies me why we remember the oft lauded on a regular basis...and yet when you investigate further you often find their 'claim to fame' is often based on work others had done before them with no recognition or nod to.
Celebrity fame it seems is politically expendable.
For those too lazy to research, Gladys West was a black American woman born in segregated Virginia in 1930.
She worked on the family farm and got a basic education where she could.
Walking three miles to school and back everyday.
She finished her school education top of her class excelling in mathematics.
Long story short, she went on to Virginia State college. Got recognition for her talent.
Joined the navy as a data analyst and created GPS.
