The problem is that voters want simplistic answers to complex issues and are happy to elect people who assure them that they are not part of the problem - it's 'others'. Anyone with true insight who tells people that what they want involves them behaving differently and paying more will be at the bottom of a 'pile-on'.

There are still plenty of visionaries and pragmatic statespeople, but electorates increasingly reject them in favour of con artists who tell them what they want to hear.
