What is the 'flag' on a USA mailbox for?

Never seen any mailboxes here with that feature.

If you are mailing something you put it in the box and raise the flag. That way the mailman knows he has mail to pick up.

@beermeplease lol i just read your answer. I think it's just a convenience for the postman.

@lissah ah right. Our postal system doesn't do that. Mail or small parcels have to be prepaid to be put into a street posting box if you can find one or taken to an actual post office or post office agency and postage paid at lodgement there.

@zonavar68 well ours has to have postage in place too.
