Anyone have a portable AC?

I need an AC soon and I'm seeing ads for the tall portable ones that stand on the floor. I saw a few reviews for one that said it's more like a fan feel and doesn't get a room to a true AC cool. Anyone have one?

Those floor standing portables are less efficient than window units. They also require the water to be emptied like a dehumidifier.

What most of them are is nothing more than an exhaust fan. An inexpensive box fan put in a window will exhaust the heat just as well, but neither cools the air.

To get one that will do some cooling, you'll need something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Gasbye-Portable-Conditioner-Compressor-Energy-Saving/dp/B0DXKBG6LT/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&th=1

Even then, it has limitations and will only cool a single room and might not adequately handle really hot weather (90s and above).

why not get a window unit?

@Baybreeze find a simp to do it

Do you mean Air Cooler? I wouldn’t recommend Portable AC, unless it comes at an extra low prices.

You need to put it’s exhaust hose outside of room or house.

Make sure you have somewhere to exhaust the hot air from the unit if you get one

I have one of those. It doesn't really do much and it's very expensive to operate. Sometimes I turn it on and stand in front of it for a couple minutes.

I had one. They work fine but not in overly large spaces. Great for cooling down a single large bedroom. You want to read everything you can on it and keep up with the maintenance for best results in the long term.

@HikingMan I appreciate that✌🏼

Maybe you can ask about a return policy? If it doesn't work to your satisfaction how hard is it to return?

we had one i don't think it even helped maybe made it hotter but at the time we were in a 120'F shed it was unbearable.. when my bro and his wife had it in just a tiny room it worked ok for them i guess

Don't like em
But i guess in a pinch they'll do
They are not effective as split or window AC.

I'd recommend not to go for it.

They cannot possibly be "air conditioners" unless they transfer the heat to outside the building, which a portable unit is very unlikely to do.

The reviews are right.

The snake-oil aspect is of hoping buyers do not really understand what an air-conditioner does - and what it does not do.

@Baybreeze I didn't know they made inside the room, AC units that stand on the floor. But yeah I think you're better off with a window unit if you really want true cooling.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@twiigss They do make them; but the machines don't do anything useful! They simply circulate the air around them.

You are right that the heat needs be discharged outside, but if it does so by simply transferring hot room air, that too will be self-defeating because it will draw in external, warm air through the home's other ventilation.

Really the only way air-conditiong can work usefully is by transferring only the heat, via an intermediary fluid in a closed system; and that is what proper AC units do.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Baybreeze That would be better.

Simply sticking the pipe out on open window won't do much because as the unit cools the room air to below ambient, heat (not necessarily hot air) will flow from hot outside to cooler inside, via the open window.
