do i pay or no?

i hired a plumber to fix a leak and phantom flush in my toilets. they said the gaskets i had put on weren't sealing properly because they were a little large for the older brand of toilet that i had, and that they would need to replace them to fix the problem.

but when i got the bill, there was a long list of other parts they had changed out: toilet handle, flush valve, etc. and on top of that, they billed me $600. to make matters worse, i can't even use those toilets because the toilet is still flushing and running on their own, so i had to turn off the water supply to save my water bill.

these guys ran up the bill and didn't even fix the problem. am i actually responsible for this bill?

Don't pay a cent until the problem is remedied.

@novaguy2u they came back out a second time and messed around and left saying they couldn't fix it.
I wouldn’t pay for something I did not authorize

That's what small claims court is for. Document everything though.

@blindbob again the only way to resolve this is to take it to small claims court. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Documention is definitely needed. Like advertised prices, parts and costs you were informed about and so forth.

You need to actually show the court everything in court!

@DeWayfarer there's no documentation. they told me the hourly rate and what the repairs would be. i agreed. then they did something different.

@blindbob then you have nothing to show the court and it's your word against their word.

The court will likely dismiss any such cases. Especially if you have already have paid.

ALWAYS keep documents! Store them anywhere. Whether is paper or off the Internet!

You need those things to prove your point!
That's ridiculous and a rip off. You could have gotten a decent brand new toilet for 1/3 of that.

They should have given you a quote before doing it listing parts and labour charges.
blindbob · 41-45
@Fluffybull they only gave me the hourly labor rate. I had already replaced the fill valve, flapper, bolts, gaskets, supply lines, and I gave them sink stoppers to replace. They told me the gaskets were slightly large for the brand and that was the cause of the leak, so they would need to replace them. I know what gaskets cost since i had just purchased them. but when they gave me the invoice for the bill, they had changed out the flush valves, gaskets, faucets, and toilet handles, a bunch of other things that they hadn't mentioned. On top of that, two of the toilets still have the phantom flush. so they changed out all those parts and didn't even fix the main problem.

Take pictures and see old parts. U could have bought new toilets for that
blindbob · 41-45
@Lilnonames they took the old parts with them. like i said, i didn't even know they had removed all of those parts and replaced them with new parts until i saw the bill. when they left, i was still under the impression that they had replaced the gaskets.

@blindbob ide tell them fuck u not pay fix myself and keep records

did you test the toilets before they left? if not then YOU need to pay..
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
@blindbob I had a plumber come to my apartment to fix my toilet I made sure the toilet worked before he left
blindbob · 41-45
@Hanginginthere they ran it and waited 10 minutes or so to see if it would run again, but maybe five minutes after they left it started again.

@blindbob just bad luck I guess
