Canada introduces ban on foreigners buying property

Why won't my country do the same thing?
Yearly, foreigners buy up land and property to the tune of more than $7 billion.
This figure is trending down but it must cease.
We have a housing crisis and allow foreigners to buy up what little comes onto the market. 😠

I agree entirely. Happening here too.

Far too many British properties and companies are allowed to be sold off abroad, and worse, although most new owners are probably legitimate, a lot of the most expensive London homes (mainly converted into flats) are bought as money-laundering.

Many are owned by Russian "oligarchs" encouraged originally by Putin but probably now rightly very nervous of him. Others are bought by dodgy sheiks and "sovereign wealth funds" (the governmental treasuries) of unpleasant Middle-Eastern states.

Those types buy the eye-wateringly costly pads in snooty bits of London, but actually the biggest plague in the British housing market is home-grown, not foreign. It is the second-homes trade, by which wealthy Londoners (mainly) push prices in attractive rural and coastal areas well beyond anything locals can afford.

While alongside these over-paid buyers, who would include money-traders, company-lawyers and "celebrities", even genuinely useful professionals like senior-grade teachers and nurses living and working in London can barely afford a decent home of their own in and around the capital.

Use certain rail services in the UK or buy your electricity from EDF and you prop up the German or French states, respectively, via their industries those nations had the sense to keep in national ownership.

Large chunks of the UK's defence industry have been bought by America.

Newsquest, which published my county's and many other local newspapers in the UK, was bought by US-firm Gannet. Result? Inevitable plummet in quality and value. (Not price, value.)

While of all ironies, Sunseeker, the once-English builder of that outward symbol of flaunted capitalist wealth, the luxury "yacht", still makes the boats here but is owned by... hard-line Communist China!

Targetting foreigners is a populist measure that will only partially address the housing shortage. Everyone should be banned from buying a second property unless they are a professional landlord or represent an investor who is likely to add to the overall housing stock rather than merely extract from it.

@SunshineGirl Whatever you mean by "populist", I think you are right.

For it is likely that the proportion of available homes bought by foreigners is very low, and also likely they only buy ones only very wealthy people can rent anyway.

However they do represent a loss of money to the country.

Some councils do at least now charge especially high Council Taxes on second-homes.

They needed to do this in the USA too. Even Mexico won’t allow foreigners to buy real estate. They can lease property till their life is over and build a home on it but when they die the property goes back to the country to sell

@cherokeepatti I watch people buying houses in Mexico on tv well it’s been a while since I’ve seen it but I seen before
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@MoonaNorth86 They can lease the land the house is on but they can’t sell it or leave it to their children when they die. The land with the house on it goes back to to Mexico. It’s not like buying a home here where we can leave it to our children and it can be passed down for generations in the family. Mexico really profits from this because Americans have leased land for “Life” and built brand new homes. When that resident dies the home they built belongs to Mexico.
