Have you ever owned your own home? if so do you own it outright (with no finance) ?

I've never owned my own home either by myself or jointly. Always rented. Except for the bullshit that's happened since the start of the Covid plandemic in early 2020 it's always been a renter-positive experience.
I own my home, well the bank does technically but soon it'll be all mine.
@nedkelly we manage

@saragoodtimes Holy hell! Your property tax is insane. 😱 Ours is a little under $400
@WhateverWorks most of it is in the school tax,

I have always bought and own my home outright no mortgage.Paying out rent is dead money.When interest rates are low it is actually cheaper to buy than rent.Eventually the home is owned.No rent to find and no mortgage while having a valuable asset.

@Stereoguy Some people are just terrible with money.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
No, I have a!ways rented. I have enough money to buy a decent house outright and live comfortably, but I would rather invest actively and usefully rather than sink it into a pile of bricks that will benefit no one except me and the taxman when I pass on. During covid my flexible lease allowed me to act on an impulse to move out of my city flat and move to the country to be nearer to my family. It was the best decision I have ever made 🙂

I have about 10 years left to pay on my house, but my mortgage is far cheaper per month than it would be to rent it. Houses in my neighborhood are renting for around 2k a month.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@HeavenBesideYou so sorry
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
@HeavenBesideYou Around here (about 50 km from Newcastle NSW) you pay A$600k to $700k for an 'average' sort of free-standing house on a bit of land but are required to have at least 20 pct deposit to avoid also having to pay LMI (Lenders Mortgate Insurance). I've never looked at apartment type living. My rent is around $500 a week (we pay rent per week here in oz). In Sydney I would be paying A$1.5 million for an 'average' sort of house, and in Newcastle itself (NSW not UK) around A$1 million.
HeavenBesideYou · 56-60, F
@butterflybaby75 It’s the same in certain parts of the country here as well.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
I will own my home again soon. Usually buying is cheaper per month than renting but requires a bit of money up front.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
I owned with first ex. We bought a house together in late 90's, and when we seperated the mortage was hardly paid off because interest rates went up and incomes didn't keep pace plus other factors.

Now I don't own one and cannot access any incentive schemes because I'm not a first home buyer now and I'm in my mid-50's. It's taken me 4 years to save $2k and median house prices around here are around A$700k. I need a minimum 20 pct deposit so around $150k in savings to go for any sort of loan. I won't be working for another 30 yrs because I'll probably be dead in 30 yrs.

I've rented for most of the last 14 yrs. Second ex bought her house in mid-2000's with help from bank of mum and dad, and paid it off I think 2 yrs ago. There was never any talk to buy another place jointly. I've never got any money from my parents to help buy a house, and my parents are both deceased now. I might get enough for a deposit out of my mum's estate this year if house prices fall in the 10 to 20 pct range due to our central back jacking up rates to control inflation.
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Yep it’s been paid of for years, now enjoying retirement don’t know how i would manage if i was paying rent
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Have done for nearly 20 years. No debts at all.
Not yet. My home will be paid off in 2033.
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
Did you ever get any help from 'bank of mum and dad' to buy your first house, or get any sort of inheritance when they passed away? Some people do and that's their stepping stone. I haven't. My parents didn't have much.
samanthaX · 41-45, T
@butterflybaby75 I had a mortgage but no help from anyone x
sheerhoselouise · 56-60, M
@butterflybaby75 nope. Had to do it by ourselves. Thankfully it all worked out and we are mortgage free in our forever home.

I have always rented . I wouldnt want to be saddled with a mortgage . A mortgage comes with more debt as then you have to have building insurance , contents insurance and all the stress should something go wrong . Renting although not great has advantages , anything goes wrong its the landlords problem , if you lose your job or suffer ill health etc in the uk your safe as it will be paid by benefits a mortgage wont . The only time I would own a home is if I got left it in a will or paid for it outright .
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
@Rhode57 There's no way to do that here in Australia. I can't get any sort of 'insurance' that will pay my rent for me - income protection only pays 75 pct of base income so it's partly like living on welfare where you have to decide between paying rent and eating. I currently pay close to half my net income as rent due to Covid-flation .
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
Mine is owned outright, it did take 27 years to clear the mortgage. It's a great feeling when the final payment is made.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
Our mortgage finished last year so we 100% own our propery.
Its a good feeling.
sheerhoselouise · 56-60, M
@RubySoo same here. Great feeling.
Justgreg · M
Yes. I’ve got about $120,000 of it paid off and $80,000 to go Before I totally own it
WhateverWorks · 36-40
We just bought our home. It’ll be a long time before we own it outright though.
fortycreek · M
My house was mortgage free, then a divorce so Im paying for it again lol
SammyJo · 51-55, F
Bought one....have another house, which I've began paying off..
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
I've never been able to afford a property here. Values went up about 50 pct during the covid mess but hardest thing is the income to expenses gap that doesn't permit much saving. costs of everything have gone up much faster than incomes over the last 10 yrs so any savings get eroded by higher costs.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Own my home outright - no mortgage
JustAmber · 36-40, F
Yes, no we still have a mortgage.
Northerner · 70-79, M
I would advise anyone to buy their own home by any means.. I have several rental properties and I know what a waste of money it is to rent.
Interest rates are low compared to what they used to be. Now is the time to buy
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
@Northerner There are rent-to-buy schemes here but they are all massive traps. There are also government incentivised 'first home' schemes where you can buy with as little as 5 pct deposit but then the govt has a caveat over your property while you pay back the borrowed money. And I'm in my mid-40's so getting a 30 yr 'standard' mortgage is out the window.
Northerner · 70-79, M
@butterflybaby75 Please PM me.
Docdon23 · M
yes--paid it off years ago, then took out home equity to help kids through college and add on...still paying that one off.
CharlesRomsey · 61-69, M
Yup. Paid off my mortgage some 30 years ago. And I'm not smug: it took a LOT of graft.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
I heard that if you have 4 kids the state gives u a free home in uk
Mrjingleswilly · 51-55, M
Mine’s paid for. There’s always new bills to suck up your cash though.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
It's not much but it's paid for. As is the one up north.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I’ve owned mine since the 1990s
Fullmetal · 46-50, M
I will in another year
