The gas company has a program which red flags abnormal usage…usually too high or too low a reading. They might send someone to check on the meter but its difficult to verify its operation. Its just cheaper for them to replace it.
Remember, it has moving parts so its bound to fail sooner or later

their infrastructure is ancient all over the country. there has been major explosions in recent years. so a good thing for them to inspect\replace

They replaced them a couple years ago here. And they come out to inspect the lines etc every once in awhile.

Yes, we had a new one put in they called us made an appt. It was a smart meter many ppl tried to oppose county won. We sleep away from it & put up a shield.

@Stereoguy they put in new meters right close to the house when they replaced them. Before the old gas meter was at the back of the backyard right flush to the fence. The reason was mostly for safety. They are responsible for the gas lines from the meter on out.
