UV light does kill bacteria and it doesn't seem like a bad deal. The only thing in question is how long will it last. If it lasts a year before breaking, I think you got your money's worth.

Actually, UV light might be a safer way to sanitize anything.

@calicuz you used an interesting term sanitize, it may help lower colony counts, but only while the light is on the object.

Yes, and UV light may only be effective in conjunction with another sanitizing method.
