While reading on interior designs I saw a history of the conversation pit.

Becoming a feature in the 1950s it peaked in the 1970s.

This is from a 1966 article showing teens hanging out.

This is from an early 1970s article showing a sound system featuring a turntable to the left, a tape deck to the right, a keyboard in the center, along with the brightly colored furniture.

I am in a bit of a fascination phase with the conversation pit.
What do you think of it?

It's great for personal style, or if you entertain a lot. I like it, but I need it in a "Modern decor," with a touch of "Industrial." That's just my style. 😎
In fact, now that I think about it, this is the the concept behind many "outdoor/backyard settings."
@calicuz It can work well for, as you said, those who entertain a lot.

I think I've only been in one house, that had one or it was more like a side room/parlor with a drop floor. It was off from the main flow of the house. But yeah. No conversations to be had there, as it was more or less, being used as a storage space.

Probably just not a popular architectural design for Wisconsin?
@Levenrack It's probably true that something like a conversation pit wouldn't work in every part of the country, or even every part of a state.
There was never one where I lived but I remember them in wealthier families' houses and I thought they were very cool. I still like the idea. Also we've still got a turntable, and brightly coloured furniture :)
@ThePatientAnarchist From what I gathered the pits weren't found in houses belonging to middle class families. But yes they're cool looking.
That's great you still have the turntable and the brightly colored furniture!

I always thought this was a neat idea. I'd fill mine with pillows and cushions.
@FoxyQueen I find it a nifty idea too.

I've seen Mad Men.
@Northwest That show fit right into the timeline for a conversation pit.
