Do people really need an 8500 sq foot house?

😯 Multi-generational family in a home is one thing... but one family of 5 or 6? Seriously? Why? All that cleaning... the dead space. 🤔

That would be about 2 million here . Lots of those around. If they can afford the 10,000 / mo payment...Power to them.
@TexChik not that much here but out of the range of most. maybe a doctor or lawyer could afford it

@saragoodtimes Its a bit too much room. We have 4800 sq ft living space, with the garages it sounds a lot bigger than it is.
@TexChik don't know our square footage but have more bedrooms and bathrooms than we could ever use

I don’t know how they afford to cool and heat a house that size, much less pay the property taxes and insurance payments.
@cherokeepatti if you can't afford to maintain it you probably wouldn't qualify for a mortgage on the house

@saragoodtimes the price of energy is going way up. Some people qualify for the mortgage but then have the home decorated, buy new furniture & window treatments, have it custom landscaped etc. and do it on credit. There is wealthy area in my city & I knew a lady who had cleaned several of those mansions. The owners will have garage sales and sell their nearly worn out stuff (including clothes) for quite a bit of money and she said it was to buy groceries. They try so hard to keep up with the Jones that it cuts their budget to the bare bones.
@cherokeepatti have a friend who's husband is a doctor also. she changes decor in their house like some people change underwear. have seen them take out carpeting that most would die to have reinstalled in their homes

Seems that happens here after all the kids move out, never understood that

I just want a cabin in the woods, far, far, far, far, far away from other people.

it's not a need it's being able to afford one
A colleague told me yesterday how his dad downsized them from 4000sqft to 2.5 and his mum never forgave him 🤣🤣🤣
