How our veterans are actually thanked on Veterans Day

I like to use this day to raise awareness on how exactly the US thanks it’s veterans for their service. While I have opinions on those in the military serving its people in the sense that they’re fighting for our freedom, I still believe our vets are due plenty of respect since they are still serving our country. They’re especially due thanks from who they’re undoubtedly serving the most: our government. Something that they don’t get nearly as much as they deserve.

How does our establishment thank our veterans for their service on this day? With freebies and discounts. Free healthcare for all veterans? Nope, we can’t do that. But hey, free donuts at Dunkin’! Greater opportunities for veterans who are unemployed or homeless? Oh no, we couldn’t do that either. But we can do special discounts at Old Navy!

For how much the powers that be encourage the utmost praise for our veterans, they themselves don’t do jack shit for them. Our armed service members just get treated like tools to serve their interests and are so quickly abandoned when they’re done serving. What’s more is that their image is used by our supposedly patriotic ruling class to sell heroism without rewarding it.

I hate to be a negative nancy on this day, but this is something that gets overlooked far too much. Many veterans end up regretting their time in the military. I’ve seen some straight up tell people thanking them for their service “It’s all bullshit,” and I don’t blame them. Our government needs to be held accountable for how it turns its back on our vets and start doing things that are actually helpful for them.

It’s like that here in Canada too, our Veterans are poor, starving and ignored by our government. Refugees get more money from the government than our Veterans do. It’s a broken system and it’s sad. A lot of my clients are Veterans and where they actually can afford to live is sad and breaks my heart.
You’re not wrong…

It's not negative, it's factual. And that makes it even sadder. 🙁
