On my dad's side they like to stay up late the 24th and open gifts on midnight but sometimes they open it around 10pm. On my mom's side they like to open one gift on the 24th and rest of the gifts the morning of the 25th, they used to do the midnight thing (or simply open gifts the night of 24th) but my mom is an early to bed person & decided to do it that way.
My siblings & their families all wait for morning of 25th (either right when they wake up or after breakfast)
Important to note both my parents are Mexican and grew up in Mexico so it's not that uncommon to do gifts the 24th.
I personally like the one gift on the 24th then rest the morning after.

Growing up as a kid, mom would wake everyone up by 9 in the morning, we'd open presents, then mom would get the rest of Christmas "dinner" prepped and warmed up and we would be eating dinner at noon.
You've brought back lots of good memories for me. 😌

We allowed our children to open one gift on Christmas Eve. We opened the rest on Christmas morning, as soon as they got up. As grandparents, we usually serve my wife's special cinnamon rolls when the rest of the crowd gets here, and we open gifts after we eat. This year, nobody is in town, so we are headed to our son's place for Christmas.

I'm also in Australia. We open gifts in the morning as soon as we wake up.

If we celebrate with other people here in AU, after lunch. In my hometown, on Christmas Eve after dinner.
Sparklesatnite · 56-60, F
@GunFinger I guess it varies then but after lunch that way all the food and cleaning up has been done and it gives the chance for the mums to feel included as they are generally busy with food preparations. It’s good to know thanks for sharing .
Im in Ireland.
I have always opened them first thing in the morning, it's the way my mom did it and hers, so I guess I just follow the tradition

@AbsolutelyFabulous I think that is so true I am a believer it stems from family traditions of old . So thank you for sharing

I think most people in the us go for a 'frist thing christmas morning', more than a few people I've known follow that plus a 'one after midnight mass, if you stayed up and went to that' add on.

@dirge That sounds very nice as well .

These days it varies with the mood. When I was a child it was always in the morning after everyone had got up and was sitting around eating mince pies and drinking sherry.
Lugwho · 61-69, M
It always used to be first thing, when the children woke up. As early as 4:00 am one year. We don't really bother with presents anymore

@Lugwho yes I have to agree but children is what create those beautiful memories
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@Sparklesatnite It was quite a weird feeling, the first year we had to wait for the children to wake up and get up.
Sparklesatnite · 56-60, F
@Lugwho that would be strange and I think I can relate to that as well. Good times and memories
