I miss Christmas starting after Thanksgiving and not before Halloween.
I have been bad recently about Christmas cards. Everyday chores, and before you know it Christmas Eve is upon us.... We do make sure to call family located in other states though.

It's not the shops, or mad rush to buy things that I miss
As young boy Our family of six siblings a father and mother did not have much ,
Our house had no bathroom, but had running water, electricity and enough to eat..
All our doors were unlocked . If someone called all they is knock and enter,
If a homeless person called, they would be put and fed and at Christmas time people went extra mile to help one another,
That's mostly all gone now

Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@antonioioio yeah, those times are gone. And now, there are too many homeless..and many are homeless becayse they're on drugs...something we didn't have back then

A few years ago I was involved in a tiny church plant. 8 of us trying to get a church going. It was getting close to Christmas when I made an off the cuff suggestion that we do an "Old Fashioned Country Christmas". Sing some carols, give out gift bags to the children and serve some hot chocolate and cookies. The night arrived and to our utter amazement 140 people showed up.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@hippyjoe1955 we all want to get back to basics. i miss it
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
There were a few holiday flyers in my paper. But even the Black Friday ads were minimal compared to previous years. I didn’t even see a Best Buy, Target or Walmart flyer this year. So many are posting online these days and customers are checking their websites. I had no intentions of going to Black Friday sales anyway. And thinking about it haven’t seen that many holiday commercials. Oh yeah a truck commercial keeps playing but they always try to hard sell at the end of the year. I remember when toys, small appliances, candies and other such things used to be in commercials before Christmas.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@cherokeepatti I suspect that a lot of flyer business is vanishing because people don't read them. When I get a flyer it goes from the mail box to the recycle box without me even opening them. I think the internet has played a major role in that transformation of business models. Remember the Christmas catalogues we all used to get? The mail order business has simply transformed into an online shop.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@cherokeepatti i received Lowe's or Home Depot and that was it.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
Yes, I have. The Christmas mall shopping department store windows and Christmas cards as well as the family gathering around to make phone calls to other family members across the US on Christmas Eve. And so much more.

@akindheart I do not recognize A&P but we had Children's Palace stores that were 100% all toys and the exterior was like walking into a Disney palace.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@WillaKissing i remember those too. and Toys R US
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@akindheart Yes Toys R US replaced the Children's Palace chain.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
You had no people at your outlet mall?? Omg, we had traffic everywhere on Friday. Tons of people were out looking for deals.
But yeah, cards are a thing of the past.

akindheart · 70-79, F
@sarabee1995 no and i purposefully went early too. i found parking and got right up to the counter. no problem.
VisionQuest · 51-55, M
I'm actually pretty happy that Black Friday isn't as popular as it used to be. Too much hype, too much commercialization of the holidays, that's what has truly ruined the holiday season.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@VisionQuest yes and now we have cyber monday to make more money. and lets not forget Amazon Mondays too. too much
VisionQuest · 51-55, M
@akindheart I do miss the days of catalogs coming in the mail and making a Christmas list based on the catalogs. Still commercialism, but not so "in your face". Halloween was still Halloween, and Thanksgiving was Thanksgiving. It made for a more cheerful season.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@VisionQuest oh gosh. i used to pour over those catalogs...Sear and Penneys
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
We still get Christmas cards, but a lot less than we used to get.
And I miss the salvation army people standing in front of stires ringing the bell for donations. That all stopped because they get robbed now.

@Midlifemale i get a few cards too and we do have Salvation Army in front of our grocery store.
Northerner · 70-79, M
For me the true sprit of Christmas has disappeared. Now it's Christmas every day for a lot of people.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@Northerner very true. and i am guilty as charged. i have indulged myself and i should be ashamed...sincerely
Northerner · 70-79, M
@akindheart We are all guilty in some way,but as you age you realise that nothing stays the same.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@Northerner very true.

I still see these things. Shopping malls are not that much in fashion now but out of town stores are packed with people.
akindheart · 70-79, F
@Gingerbreadspice my brother and i went to Cracker Barrel for thanksgiving lunch. we got right in. no wait. but my friend in Kentucky said hers was packed. weird.
ScreamingFox · 41-45, F
Because it all became too much. And with the state of the country, not many people have extra money to spend, and we have to work endlessly so we're too tired.
Corporate greed eventually ruins things.

@ScreamingFox i don't think we can put the greed back in the box...it is here to stay

Most things that technology has trampled or just turned inside out so they no longer resemble what they were at their core.

@NocturnalTide very true!!

Malls are a vanishing breed as well
akindheart · 70-79, F
