There is no specific thing that can be attached to being Hindu. There are many rituals that a Hindu may or may not follow. There are many believes that a Hindu may or may not believe. The are many scriptures that a Hindu may or may not read. There are many teaching that a Hindu may or may not follow. There are many philosophies that a Hindu may or may not even heard about. There are many Hindu Gods & Goddesses that a Hindu may or may not worship. A Hindu may go to Temple daily or may not go to any temple all his life. There is lot of text on how to live, eat, exercise, work, behave, worship, administer, rule, become divine, even a practical book on procreation, etc.
Hindu religion doesn't imposes you for anything. In other words, Sanatan Dharma(not exactly the Hindu religion, because dharma is not equal to religion), gives you all means but doesn't imposes anything on you. You can gain from it or you can totally ignore it, you can be a atheist and still be a Hindu.
In single word, it's freedom. It's up to you what you want to become and where you want to go. It is about seeking instead of believing.
Truth is Hinduism is not a religion.
So, to answer your question, everyone feels differently because there is no imposition on practices. It's up to you how you want to be.
A peek in to Hinduism.
