Antibiotic allergic reactions

Well we are back at the ER. Joel had a severe reaction to the antibiotics he started to. It happened so fast, I have never been so scared in my life. I had to call 911 and they took him straight to the ER. He had no clue he was allergic to them. Honestly it's the first time he's been on them since he was a kid. They are going to keep him over night to make sure he's ok

It's okay, don't beat yourself up about it... you know that he's allergic to penicillin now - even if it was scary to find out about it like this.

Sometimes, you can consume something for years and never have a problem with it until the day that you do.

I was like that with some of my allergens, too. I never had a problem with cherries as a child - but they get me now. I also had a major reaction to banana flavoured medicine as a baby, yet I can eat actual banana... so I don't know how they mixed that flavouring to include something I'm allergic to.
@Cigarguy101 Yeah, there was no need for the Mexico comment at all. He wouldn't have said it to a Brit, for example.

Joel might be used to navigating things like this, so maybe you can talk to him and find out how he would like you to respond to such racism going forward from here??? I understand that you want to be a good dad and protect him as best as you can, but asking him for guidance and following his wishes is also a positive thing for you as a parent since you're showing him that you're listening to his views and supporting him as best as you can.

@HootyTheNightOwl Joel isn't my son he's my partner but honestly the race thing hasn't happened to often.

I will say we don't go out of our comfort zone to often and when we do go out it's places that know us. More so for my issues.

But I know the hospital er isn't the place to start a battle. We did file a complaint today about the statement made to him
@Cigarguy101 Sorry for my confusion... I'm not well at the minute and am struggling to recall many details that I should know.

I'm glad that you both felt able to complain about that aspect of his treatment because it was inappropriate.

I have MILD reactions to some antibiotics...my legs and arms break out in hives...but your son must have gone into anaphylactic shock!!! I am so, so sorry that happened to him! His doctors will have to pay attention very carefully from now on before they prescribe! I have a whole list of stuff I can't take.

If someone is allergic to a drug, it is always the second exposure that starts the anaphylaxis cycle. Sounds like you need to aske the Doc for a prescription for some epi pens to keep handy.
