Congratulations anti-vaxxers! They said it couldn't be done!!

But you guys wouldn't take no for an answer - you brought POLIO back to the USA! Amazing!!

A young adult male in Rockland County NY, who didn't leave the country, has contracted polio (AKA poliomyelitis). They don't know where he got it, other than from some other infected person. Yes, he's unvaccinated, despite the requirement that all school age children be multiply vaccinated for polio.

He showed up at his doctor's office complaining of weakness and paralysis.
Polio is very contagious, and a person can spread the virus even if they aren't sick. Symptoms, which can be mild and flu-like (fatigue, fever, headache, stiffness, muscle pain, vomiting), can take up to 30 days to appear, during which time an infected individual can be shedding virus to others. Though rare, some polio cases can result in paralysis or death.

In this case, sequencing performed by the Wadsworth Center – NYSDOH's public health laboratory – and confirmed by CDC showed revertant polio Sabin type 2 virus.
Yes, the paralysis is permanent and irreversible. And it all could have been prevented by a few routine doses of polio vaccine; CDC recommends total of four doses: 2 months old, 4 months old, 6 through 18 months old, and 4 through 6 years old.

Sixty plus years of hard work by doctors and epidemiologists and public health officials is starting to be undone by anti-vaxxers and the misinformation they spread. Lordy lordy, what does it mean when the ignorant spread POLIO in our great land??

Well don't blame the anti-vaxxers blame the parent's for not getting this child vaccinated from this
RosaMarie · 41-45, F
@smileylovesgaming that would be the same thing. If the parents didn't get the kids vaccinated, then they are anti vax.
tindrummer · M
@smileylovesgaming ? wouldn't that be because the parents are anti-vaxxers?
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@tindrummer @RosaMarie I don't believe in getting like the covid vaccine. If my kids need certain vaccines to just go to school yes get them.
@smileylovesgaming There have been general anti-vaxx lies circulating for about 20 years. Some fool decided that vaccines cause autism. And a bunch of suckers and nuts started swallowing and spreading this lie. And some of them were, unfortunately, pretty prominent.

Trump, vaccines, autism
@ElwoodBlues The problem is that the fool involved was Playboy Playmate Jenny McCarthy, who was a ferocious mother who insisted that her boy, Evan, was made autistic by the vaccines he got.

Her influence made the scientific community go on a quest to check the dependency, and a very exhaustive search produced nothing...if memory serves, one of the studies used a Dutch medical db of that country's citizens to find a null result.

She was the darling of shock jocks, the leader of anxious mothers, and the insistent voice about vaccines. She tried to claim she wasn't anti-vaccine, but only that people should get educated and work out their own solutions...like asking the doctor if there were a "natural" way to achieve the same effect...!

The fact that RFK, Jr., is also anti-vaccine is just astounding; he is apparently trying to negate some of the positive service of his family... His arg. seems to be numerical--"we only had 'n' vaccines when *I* was a kid, why do we now need 'm > n' vaccines?"--which is no argument at all.

So a sexy Playmate who was a mom and a Kennedy...and the powder keg of people who think that their lack of study & knowledge trumps the study & knowledge of others...et voilà! we have arrived at today. 🥺
@SomeMichGuy Yeah, I used to joke about "not quite doctor" Jenny McCarthy, an "investigator" whose earlier body of work was widely published in the "anatomical journals" of Mr Hugh Hefner. No, she never got a college degree.

It's amazing how much damage a few determined idiots can do.
@ElwoodBlues Yes. She grabbed onto that explanation and propounded it to the universe.

Had she been ugly, 500#, a nobody, I think it would have had considerable less traction.
