What might you do?

My sister had a root canal done couple months ago. (Just the first part when they extract the nerve) They could not do the final sealing of it because it started hurting. They said it can't be inflamed, hurting or tender to completely finish the crown part.
They believe because her diabetes has been so irregulated, it's causing the tooth not to heal.
She has two choices, have the tooth extracted or see if they can retreat it.

She's going to talk with the doctor tomorrow about the pros and cons of either choice. In the meantime what would you do?

I would do what they suggest, since I would not know better, and besides, that is probably the only way my treatment would be covered, except for copays.

They should not put such a decision on the patient. They should know what to do, in my opinion. That is what we all pay them those high fees for, right?

Sort of like when I take in my car. I am clueless. I can only trust they will fix the problem. And if I am swindled, well, that was my charitable contribution to society. At least half the bill supports labor costs not corporate profit.

As for healthcare, the insurance company is on the hook so that is their job to fight it out. Let them fix me first and worry about who has to pay for it later. I have trusted my doctors so far. And they hate the insurance, too. I saw the looks on their faces when my rehab was denied for two weeks while I remained in the hospital when I could have been doing physical therapy for two weeks. The hospital only did physical therapy like once a week, and no machines just we walked the hallway. Lame. They also would not even cut my toenails. Nope, need a podiatrist for that. Jeebus! One nurse, at least, was kind enough to shave my beard. It grew back, though.

@JoyfulSilence I agree doctors are not fans of some insurances. I also agree they should make a strong decision about what the patient should do . He's leaning towards extraction but she doesn't truly want it..they're talking today via phone to go over it. I think it should be extracted because of the very slow healing she has and it seems for two months to not stop hurting 🙁
Thanks for your ideas.

@Coralmist

Yeah, they said my diabetes slows down healing. Some suggested that it contributed to my infection. My doctor checks my feet once a year for wounds. My toes are numb. 😟

My wife WAS going in for root canal but next day decided for extraction, much to the dentists' dismay. That cost £60 and R.C. was £800 I encouraged the RC but she saw the price. The dentist was only dismayed as he was an Indian and we didn't take the expensive option. A white man would have said "No problem, it is up to u" in an encouraging manner.

Apart from price another CON is RC doesn't always heal tooth from pain as 2 others told us. Pain will come back within months so it is a risk. The 3rd con is after extraction the dentist will show u the tooth and it can be in a wonderful condition! You're just saying bye to it.

Pro: extraction once done, pain permanently gone.
Getting a replacement tooth (denture) is gonna be a whole lot cheaper.

Root canals are serious stuff! When I had mine done, the guy used so much novacaine that just about the side of my face was entirely numb, I could feel pressure almost in my eye, and nose was going numb, but the guy did amazing work.

My only fear is after 5 years it fell out with the post, took it to my new dentist and he was able to replace the post and crown. My fear is that he didn't entirely clean it out before reinserting the post so yeah that's where I'm at with that.

If they can't deaden and or completely remove the nerve, remove the tooth. I went through a similar situation with a root canal, had the tooth filled, and still had nerve pain, supposedly where there was no nerve present. So, they then reopened the tooth with no relief, and they pulled it.

This is what I did. Maybe this information can help.

I had extensive dentistry when I was young and it always hurt very badly. I was always been called a sook.

It wasn't until I was 35 that a Dentist realised that the ANAESTHETICS that they were using WERE NOT WORKING:)

I get on better with them now:)

I’d probably have it removed and either get an implant or wooden tooth like Washington. Or it’s possible that antibiotics might reduce inclination infection and fix the issue. Another option is start pureeing food

Pull it. Make sure that an ORAL SURGEON gives the anesthetic and can hit the right nerve to do the block. I went to a place where the son of the owner- a periodontist- couldn't hit my nerve for all the tea in Ceylon, even though he had x-rays, a complete panoramic jaw scan, and two visits to try. In desperation on a third visit, he mentioned it to the Oral Surgeon who casually said "let me give it a shot" (no pun intended), and with NO X-rays, NOT seeing the panorama, NEVER having examined my mouth, hit the nerve on the first shot and I was numb in less than a minute!!!

I had a root canal done myself. It hurts for sure but it is only for a short time. The best thing is to trust what the dentist says. There are procedures that she should follow after the root canal that it will be less annoying

I'm a chicken with the dentist. Even for the cleaning I need sedation dentistry

It hard for me to even sit still just for xrays of my teeth.

It took me 40 years to get the nerve up to go again. I even cry, sweat and shake a little
if it's a 2nd rear molar chances are she doesn't need it.... but first I'd get a second opinion and ask my primary doctor what he thinks

Get rid of it. A root cannel is expensive af. And after a few years the tooth will happen again and again. It happened to me. Definitely remove it.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
Where is the tooth? If it’s out of site, I don’t need it and it doesn’t show when I smile then I would remove it.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Jenny1234 It's way in back
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Coralmist yeah just pull it out
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Once a root canal is done a crown should be placed as soon as possible. In the mean time avoid nuts seeds and hard candy or crunchy food. Also unless there is infection do not consent to root canals. Always try a filling first. Sometimes a filling suffices.
SlippingAway · 46-50, F
I'd probably remove it because it would annoy me to wait
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
I’d just have it out.
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45
I'd get it yanked... mostly because I don't like dentists.
Lilymoon · F
I would have it extracted.
GovanDUNNY · M
Have it removed
