Should euthanasia be legalized in every state?

Why or why not
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No, it’s a slippery slope and that type of law can eventually turn into aggressively suggesting people be euthanized rather than treated when they are suffering from a variety of chronic conditions.

@4meAndyou Castreau got elected on an abortion, anti racist and unlimited immigration platform. Now look where they are

Sound familiar? Wonder where we'd be?
Stuffy · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti Who, where and when has anyone ever been encouraged to euthanize?
All I’ve ever heard is people having to fight for the right to have it.
Stuffy · 61-69, F
@Thrust sources please for that statistic.

A doctor or any person who performs an act of involuntary euthanasia is performing murder. The law in every state 0f the United States, so decrees.

Assisted suicide is legal in 10 jurisdictions in the US: Washington, D.C. and the states of California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, New Mexico, Maine, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Washington.

The HORROR of assisted suicide is the thought that at the very last moment, when it is too late, the person requesting it might have changed their mind.

@cherokeepatti They killed my Mom at the hospice in Michigan. They asked my brother if he wanted to employ measures to extend her life, and he said no...so they stopped letting her have water. To me, that is sooo horrifying.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou I hate that when they do it. I have heard of a case I think in the UK where parents were ordered not to give a child water and to let her die “naturally”. That is just code for “Speed it up and empty a hospital bed or nursing home bed for others.

I don't believe in "every state" on most things. Bottom up government IMHO tends to work best except for a few things.

I think the right to die is everyone's right, but I have some problem when engaging others to assist. And that concern is the mental capacity. Many people with Alzheimer's or dementia diseases express a wish to die. Since they lack the mental capacity to make such a decision. who gets to make that decision for them? My dad lived to 97 and in his final years expressed wishes to die, but then changed his mind the next day. We usually just responded with light hearted responses, like "not this weekend, we already have other plans." He'd respond with something like "OK, but how about the next weekend?"
Adrift · 61-69, F
I believe it should be but the person should to have their wishes spelled out in their advanced directive.
Stuffy · 61-69, F
It’s a topic I’m interested in. But I don’t know the answer. There is so much to consider. I lean towards being in favor but know I’m ignorant about allot of what the ‘powers that be’ would have to say and do about it. Curious about others opinions and any relevant facts shared.

@Stuffy so many doctors to sign off as well as the person
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Stuffy
But who would be in charge of deciding special circumstances?

Bingo. That's the issue.

Hospice provides a way to die from a disease or natural causes without intervention. They even provide morphine to ease the passing. That may be the closest we get.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
@Heartlander I get it. I have heard hospice stories about that
No. I agree with @cherokeepatti and her slippery slope assessment.
It should be legal in all 50 States for people with a 60 percentage chance of dying from life threatening illnesses and or no chance of getting better.
Thrust · 56-60, M
@TheOnlyTribalChiefRomanReigns

That becomes everyone at some point. Unless you are the 2nd coming
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
Only a matter of time
Jackhoff · 46-50, M
Only and only if death is imminent and they are suffering. Whole family in agreement.
Stuffy · 61-69, F
@Jackhoff there should be more to life than simply being not dead.
Jackhoff · 46-50, M
@Stuffy agree but if the person has no quality of life and that is their wishes should we be selfish and stand in the way.

@ToddpicogramakaSatan That seem like more of a call for housing than a call for death.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
