Do you know first aid, and could you use it if you had to? Sometimes you dont know till you do.

Ive been taught first aid many times over the years and kepp my qualification upto date as part of my leader training. Ive used it a few times over the years on camps with burns, cuts, etc but today was the first time I have used it to deal with a situation in general public. I can honestly say the training did kick in and i was able to keep the casualty as safe as possible till ambulance crew arrived to take over. She regained consciousness and we quickly ruled out heart attack and stroke as possible issues, dealt with bleeding but had to put her into recovery position as she drifted on edge of consciousness.
Its only now a few hours later trying to process it all that I can put together what I was actually doing.

I've been an EMT for 30 years, though currently my card isn't valid. I've seen all kinds of things but I'm also a good luck charm, so I miss all the best stuff.

I will say this as someone who's seen emergencies from both sides; as crucial as good medical training is, if you have nothing else to offer, comfort feels as good as opiates. Touch a person in need, reassure them, remind them they're not alone - I've seen it be as helpful as an IV push.

And way to go! Having skills is one thing; using them in an emergency is another and it sounds like you did great.

I have my Seniors First Aide Certificate which I keep up to date yearly.
I have used it to treat: Cuts, burns, a stab wound, CPR, heat stroke. Snake bite. And splinted a broken arm or two.
I used to be a Scout Leader and taught it to the kids, even though they all groaned and complained at the time. All my scouts were able to complete their Senior First Aide Certs as well.

Oh wow, good job you were there. I did basic first aid through work but haven't been taught any for many years now. I think I would vaguely know basic stuff but probably should refresh what I was taught.

I have shied away from learning first aid mainly because I do not want to put myself in a situation where I might be solely responsible for keeping someone alive.
Yes, that is very selfish but imagine moving someone into the recovery position and causing their neck to break or some such. If left alone then their neck might not have broken.

@Gusman its a daunting prospect. I didn't put her into recovery unti i needed to to protect her airway
I still remember how to do CPR but I don't think I learned first aid. If I did I forgot.
