I did but at my age, no longer.

When younger I was scared stiff of needles. Needing a blood test once I remember sitting waiting for my turn with a thumping heart, virtually trembling! And it was only a little prick!

I avoided the whole thing when the Blood People visited our firm, lying low. But one day the works nurse collared me and virtually frog marched me into "volunteering"!

Eventually I gave over 160 donations, the final few years platelets. The nurses called me the "baby blood" person as apparently my blood was ideal for premature babies.

Obviously I'm no longer afraid of needles.

And the tea and biscuits were nice - and when giving platelets, which takes over an hour, also the sandwiches!

@SW-User Mine too, but where I live the don't segregate it for them.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SW-User woohoo for you!!
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
I've tried multiple times but they don't let me, I've organized blood donations with my University though. Unfortunately here many people don't/can't for multiple reasons. Although when there's need there's also mobilization. There was an awful accident last week and there have been thousands donations since then.
Thank you for doing so! Especially for people your age it's even more difficult. I wish you will receive double the good you have done!
akindheart · 61-69, F
@HannibalAteMeOut that is very sweet of you. my daughter was very ill until she passed. i wanted to make sure she had blood if she needed it.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@akindheart my condolences 🫂 that's the greatest pain a person can know. You've helped others in the process.
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
I give regularly. I have to remember to switch up the arms as I didn't realize using the same one every two months was scarring it up. Thought it had to be much more frequently than that to cause track marks.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@ineedadrink i didn't know that. I always use my right arm
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ineedadrink Professionals can often do a much neater job with a needle. Hoever, that donor needle is a much bigger bore that a disposable syringe😷
Jeephikelove · 46-50, F
I used to until a nurse lost my vein and thought it was a good idea to dig for it. 🫤
It hurt so bad and gave me a fear of needles. 😕
1pebbles · 56-60, F
@Jeephikelove due to having received and multiple blood draws, I too am very hard stick. You have my sympathy as nurses have "searched and dug for my veins"!

I Have hydrated and instructed phlebotomists what veins have given in the past, Having been stuck in 5 different places before a vein decided to give.
Jeephikelove · 46-50, F
@1pebbles I feel you! Why do they do that? The last surgery I had 2 nurses blew 5 veins trying to get my IV started, they finally left it for the anesthesiologist to do who put it in the WORST place, inside my elbow on my right arm…I’m right handed and had it in for 3 days. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️
1pebbles · 56-60, F
@Jeephikelove Ugh! I've had veins blown or just the needle pushed right thru! I feel for you and can relate to the pain!
1pebbles · 56-60, F
Thank you, having received 2 pints of blood, I'm grateful for those that donated. I have donated in the past.
1pebbles · 56-60, F
@akindheart Im grateful for those that can regular donate, for those of us that I have a difficult time in donating.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@1pebbles nothing to worry about on your end. I am glad I can help.
1pebbles · 56-60, F
@akindheart I'm grateful for those that give so unselfishly
Freeranger · M
I did......I know I've donated over 6 gallons.....but I've not donate in in recent years.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Freeranger i give when I have time
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I donate every 3 months.. Over 50 donations now.. The Blood service here is a centralised affair that operates and moves blood and blood products across the country, so its simple and something I can give back that matters..😷
akindheart · 61-69, F
@whowasthatmaskedman i give to 2 organizations that were fighting with each other...i don't care as long as someone can use it.
LarryZ · 56-60, M
I would if I could but I pass out when donating blood. It’s not the sight of the blood but rather the speed at which I donate. I’m a good bleeder. Plasma I have no issue with and have donated hundreds of times.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@LarryZ i am a good bleeder too. it gushes out. i haven't done the platelet yet.
WillaKissing · 56-60
I used to donate blood, but once I had shots from the Army for overseas deployment the red cross has refused me as a Donar, now let that thought sink in.....
akindheart · 61-69, F
@WillaKissing terrible just terrible
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Good for you. When I was younger i didn't nated blood and at times, platelets. As a physician, I felt responsible for replacing blood I used.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
In this state it will be sold to whoever will pay for it.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring whoa...I don't know if mine was sold or not. it went to Baptist Health...
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@akindheart Each state has different protocols for divvying up donated body parts. In this state millionaires and celebrities go to the top of the list. Alcoholic has been athletes should not be getting livers.
Yes. I’m a big fan of the cookies and juice at the end. But helping people is cool too.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@southerngent me too!!
I am a regular donor, and in the UK we get to know where it has been used
akindheart · 61-69, F
@startingover23 i love that

Jonjdw · 46-50, M
I can’t
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Jonjdw I didn't want to pry and ask you...you have to be very careful..
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@akindheart yes I do luckily I have a mild case and I am able to work and have a regular life.

The main thing I must worry about is internal bleeding. And nose bleeds. Scut I can see when it’s not bleeding or is bleeding. A bleed on the inside from the injury I cannot tell if it’s stoped or not
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Jonjdw oh boy. that is serious!!
MarineBob · 56-60, M
I'll give if they promise not to sell it
akindheart · 61-69, F
@MarineBob i wonder if my 2 sell it? i have to ask.
Monalisaa1986 · 36-40, F
I can’t donate unless I ask my dr if I can as I take medication
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Monalisaa1986 i understand....your health is more important..
